Things that blow: being here instead of with my kids.
Pumping in an empty office instead of nursing my baby to bed. |
Is it too much to ask that my family have health insurance AND that I am able to put my babies to bed each night? Am I being unreasonable? I know that nights like this are rare and it could be worse, way worse; but you know what? I purposely never pursued jobs that would be obviously worse (in terms of work/life balance). I always knew I wanted a family. But I also knew I wanted to have an interesting and hopefully fulfilling career. Why is that so difficult? I know there must be some magical job out there that achieves this balance. One that is flexible, lets you prioritize your family, and maybe is not a full 40 hours a week (while I'm asking for miracles). I just have to look a little harder for it I guess.
I'm lucky enough to have my office and the house within a mile of each other, so I always leave at 5 or so, it's just that on occasion I come back at 8 or 9 or VPN in.
ReplyDeleteI think every job has its good and its bad. I have to travel some (which can be a bad from kid perspective, though can also be refreshing), but I have great flexibility to go serve pizza or help in the library at my kids' schools and things like that.
I only live about a mile and a half from work too, so that is nice. I hadn't thought about coming back after the babies are in bed. Probably because that is around when I go to bed (I'm so lame/tired).
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous that you can have a good attitude about travel. Our travel budget was suspended during/since the layoffs and I could not have been happier. There is still some travel, but usually if I keep quiet, people will forget about it until it is too late. But travel hurts my feelings too. I try to have a better attitude, but I fail.
:( Off post: I hate how clean your desk is.
